WING GREENWOOD – The Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister
of National Defence, appointed country music star George Canyon
to a three year position as Honorary Colonel for the Wing on
Wednesday, December 12, 2007.
The
title carries many responsibilities such as developing, promoting
and sustaining strong community ties, assisting in hosting parades
and other Wing functions, fostering esprit de corps and establishing
and maintaining liaison with the Wing’s charities and
associations.
Born
and raised in Nova Scotia, the country star has always been
an ardent supporter of the military and all of the hard work
that its members do. “It is an unbelievable honour to
be appointed to this position and I look forward to interacting
with the men and women of 14 Wing Greenwood on a more personnel
basis for the next three years,” stated Mr. Canyon.
“We
are absolutely thrilled that George has accepted the position
and with his strong community background and work with charities,
I have no doubt that he will be a wonderful addition to our
military family,” said Wing Commander, Colonel Derek Joyce.
A
formal ceremony will be held at the Wing on February 21, 2008
to formalize the appointment and give Mr. Canyon an opportunity
to officially meet the military personnel of the Base.

‘In
A Quiet Room’ Tour
In the mid-1990s Johnny Cash decided it was time to take his
live show to a new level, an intimate and personal level. Small
theatres and clubs, including Johnny Depp's famed "Viper
Room" in LA, set the tone for a tour that truly 'took the
music to the people.' Over a decade later, Cash's business philosophy
is being utilized by a Canadian country music superstar who
has also resurrected the Cash smash "Ring of Fire,"
at his live shows.
George Canyon's "In a Quiet Room" tour speaks volumes
with the numbers alone. Fans will have a chance to see him perform
forty three shows in all 10 provinces and with an average venue
size of less then 500 people. Canyon will hit the road in unprecedented
fashion traveling over 12,000 kilometres from the time the tour
kicks off in September to the time the tour wraps in late November.
"I've
been blessed enough to win 2 Juno awards, and a bunch of CCMA
awards, but none of that matters if we can't celebrate it all
with the fans,” says Canyon. "In 2006 we played arenas
right across the country. As we brainstormed about what we wanted
to do for 2007, we came up with the "In a Quiet Room"
concept. Most of these venues are intimate enough to make people
feel like I am performing for them alone, and that was exactly
what we wanted. Fans should be prepared to hang out with me
and the band for about 2 hours as we crank out some of my hits
and as I pay homage to some of the classic country songs that
have had a profound influence on my career.”
"This
show is about a 'once in a lifetime experience' for fans,"
says Canyon's Agent Jim Cressman. "People will never again
get a chance to see Canyon in intimate venues like the ones
chosen for this tour. This show is going to be less about the
smoke, the lights and the glitz and more about showcasing George's
personality and world class vocals. It is a landmark event,
that will sell-out fast, and we are proud to deliver it to his
fans - they deserve it!"
