George
Canyon to help celebrate Sam Steele Days
by COURTNEY KAISER
A
more appropriate entertainer could not be found to help Cranbrook
celebrate its annual Sam Steele Days festival in good ol'
country style. And that is why the Sam Steele Society is so
thrilled that Canada's newest musical superstar, country singer
George Canyon, will be performing at the Cranbrook Rec Plex
on Friday, June 17, 2005.
The
tall and handsome 34 year old singer recently won a Juno award
in Winnipeg for Country Recording of the Year for his debut
album One Good Friend. He also took home awards for Recording
of the Year, Rising Star of the Year and the coveted Entertainer
of the Year at this year's East Coast Music Awards.
However,
don't be alarmed if you're not quite sure who he is. Canyon
only recently became a household name after placing second
in the USA Network's 2004 television program Nashville Star.
Born and bred in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canyon is the first
Canadian to crack the top ten in this popular singing contest
and he was a huge fan favourite with the millions of viewers
who watched him perform each week.
After
the show aired, Canyon signed a record deal with Universal
and a management deal with Garth Brooks Management team. Since
then, the affable singer has been thrust into the spotlight
at turbo speed. His first major label CD release One Good
Friend debuted at number one on Canadian music charts and
his first three singles from the album all charted in the
top ten across Canada. As well, his hit single Good Day to
Ride, an independent release, also burned up the charts and
spent more than 14 weeks on radio station playlists. Canyon's
current hit My Name can be found on CMT's Top 20 video count.
And
George Canyon is about to become even more famous. Beginning
in July, Canyon will be an opening for Tim McGraw on his summer
tour.
"We
are absolutely thrilled to be able tot get George Canyon for
Sam Steele Days," said John Sheehan, Sam Steele Chairperson.
"He is the most popular male vocalist in the country
right now and is a great addition to our celebration this
year. This was an opportunity for the Sam Steele Society that
we couldn't pass up and it will help bring national attention
to our festival."
The
Sam Steele Society will be working with FJ Hurtak's Kootenay
Concert Connection to produce the show. "I think this
ties in very nicely with the Sam Steele theme," said
Hurtak. "Canyon is already more well known in the U.S.
than Paul Brandt, Anne Murray and Gordon Lightfoot. He's a
household name there. And in six months our market will be
too small for a performer like him. We're really excited to
get him."
The
concert will be held at the Cranbrook Rec Plex on Friday,
June 17 at 7:30pm. Tickets for the concert go on sale on Saturday,
April 23 at 10:00am at the Rec Plex Box Office or call (250)
425 SEAT to book your tickets for the show. All seats are
reserved and are priced at $32.50 including GST, plus applicable
service charges.
