'I'm
home on the range, mending the fences here on the ranch and
milking
every minute with my family that I can."
George
Canyon is enjoying his last few days off at his Alberta ranch
before
hitting the dusty trail in support his new release, Somebody
Wrote Love.
The
promotional tour will bring him to Halifax next Monday, for
a 4 p.m. in-
store appearance and autograph session at Wal-Mart in Bayer's
Lake. "I'm
looking forward to coming home and shaking some hands and saying
hi and
thanks to everybody who has supported me over this past while"
said the Pictou
County native. "It's been a busy couple of years, and I
don't think I would've made
it if it weren't for the love and support of the good folks
back home in Nova
Scotia keeping my feet on the ground."
Canyon's
career is the stuff of legend. The tall, modest singer rambled
around the country rock circuit for years, before placing second
in the USA Network's Nashville Star talent search in May 2004,
instantly making him a household name to millions of music fans.
Soon after, he signed with Garth Brooks's manager and promptly
landed a recording contract with Universal Music.
The
last two years have been a whirlwind for Canyon, culminating
in the writing, recording and release of the new CD.
"I'm
glad it's done, and I'm real pleased with it. It's a strong
and diverse collection of songs that reveals the real side of
me.
"My
fingerprints are all over this record."
Canyon
recruited some of the best studio players in the world for Somebody
Wrote Love, but it was a fellow Nova Scotian who brought a deeper
sound to the
recording sessions.
"Dave
Gunning was very involved with a lot of the tunes. He's a good
buddy and
an amazing talent and we have great old time working and playing
together.
I'm hoping he can join me on the road again this time."
After
a few select summer shows, Canyon will take the full band back
on the road across North America this autumn. He couldn't say
if the upcoming tour will bring him to Halifax, but reminisced
about his very first concert experience.
"I
saw Randy Travis at the Metro Centre way back when, so it would
be real neat
to come full circle, back to the place where it all started
for me. Let me see
if I can pull a few strings and hammer something out."
