— Country music fans will be in their glory this week
as George Canyon makes two Cape Breton appearances.
The Pictou County native will perform at Strathspey Place in
Mabou Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and at the Membertou Trade and Convention
Centre Saturday at 8 p.m. as part of his cross-Canada In A Quiet
Room tour. He said it’ll be nice to be close to home over
the coming days.
“I was born and raised only an hour and a half from the
island so it all feels like home to me and any chance we get
to come home and play shows we try to jump at,” he said.
Canyon said the tour, which started in Courtenay, B.C. and will
end Nov. 21 in Pictou, has been really well-received across
the country with most shows being sell-outs.
“It’s been a long one. We have 15 shows left and
we’ve done 35,” he said.
The country music star, whose career received a big boost when
he finished in the runner-up position on Nashville Star in 2004,
described his latest tour as a big kitchen party.
“We’re up here sitting on stage. There’s no
fancy light shows, no fancy sound systems, just me and my boys
on stools, talking and bantering and picking on each other and
telling stories behind the songs and taking questions from the
audience. It’s been a great time,” he said.
The multiple Juno, East Coast Music Award and Canadian Country
Music Award winner will perform a mix of his own tunes as well
as many from his latest album, Classics, a collection of country
favourites including Ring of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues, Good
Hearted Woman and Hello Darlin’.
“It was sure a lot of fun to do,” said Canyon, of
the album. “I just loved the way these songs were done
originally and I wanted to try to pay as much homage as I could
to the originals.”
Once this tour is finished, Canyon said he’s looking forward
to some down time during the holidays.
“I’m going to go home and I’m going to enjoy
Christmas with my family ... and then in the New Year we’re
getting right into the studio and working on the new album,”
he said, noting he’s looking forward to collaborating
with talented songwriters like Richard Marx and Nickleback’s
Chad Kroeger on new material.
The show at Strathspey Place is sold out. Tickets for the performance
in Membertou are still available at the convention centre box
office or by calling 539-2300.
